Claudius

11 BCE–54

Claudius became Roman emperor unexpectedly in AD 41 after the assassination of his nephew Caligula. Although ancient writers mocked his disabilities and dependence on freedmen and wives, his reign expanded imperial administration, annexed territories and launched the conquest of Britain. His marriages to Messalina and Agrippina ended in political crisis, and he died in AD 54, possibly poisoned, after adopting Nero ahead of his own son Britannicus.

Robert Graves’s I, Claudius and Claudius the God created the most influential fictional portrait of the emperor, presenting apparent weakness as a mask for intelligence and survival. Douglas Jackson’s Claudius follows the British invasion from a more military perspective. Modern novels frequently challenge the hostile senatorial sources, although they may replace one simplification—the fool—with another, the secret republican genius.

In non-fiction, Claudius is discussed in Lindsay Powell’s Eager for Glory and Mary Beard’s Twelve Caesars. In Lindsay Powell’s Eager for Glory, Eager for Glory is a biography of Nero Claudius Drusus, the younger brother of Tiberius and stepson of Augustus.
