Agrippina marries her uncle Claudius and uses her new position to secure Nero’s adoption and advance him ahead of the emperor’s natural son, Britannicus. Nero is educated for rule, married to Octavia and drawn into a court where every friendship may conceal a faction. As Claudius’s succession becomes increasingly dangerous, the alliance between mother and son begins to carry the seeds of the rivalry that will later divide them.

Agrippina’s strategy succeeds because Roman succession has no fixed constitutional mechanism. Adoption, marriage, military support and court access can all be used to manufacture legitimacy. By advancing Nero, she creates a claimant whose power will eventually reduce her own. The novel follows that paradox as a mother’s political achievement becomes the foundation of the tyranny that threatens her.
