Rome, AD 41. Pavo’s success in the arena attracts rivals who see him as both a threat and a profitable spectacle. Macro attempts to prepare him for a new opponent while officials around Claudius interfere with the contest for their own purposes. The challenge tests Pavo’s skill, but also exposes how a gladiator’s reputation can be controlled by patrons, bookmakers and political enemies.

The arena makes Pavo’s body a commercial and political asset controlled by other people. Victory increases his value but also gives rivals a reason to manipulate future bouts. Macro’s training can prepare him for an opponent, not for every patron or official who profits from the spectacle. The story therefore treats gladiatorial combat as part of a larger economy of reputation, gambling and imperial favour.
