Rome, AD 41. Pavo gains an opportunity to confront those connected to his family’s disgrace, but revenge inside the arena is controlled by officials who can change the terms of combat. Macro recognises that the promised contest may be designed to remove them both. Their attempt to expose the scheme forces them to choose between personal justice and survival within a system where punishment is staged as entertainment.

The promised opportunity for revenge is dangerous precisely because the arena is never neutral ground. Officials determine opponents, weapons and rules, so Pavo cannot assume that courage will give him a fair contest. Macro’s suspicions turn the bout into an investigation of who benefits from the spectacle, while Pavo has to decide whether vengeance is worth entering a trap designed for him.
