Egypt, AD 49. Ajax and the survivors of the Cretan revolt have turned to piracy and use the names of Macro and Cato to provoke resistance against Roman rule. The two officers join a campaign along the Nile and into the southern frontier to destroy the raiders. Their pursuit moves through strained provincial alliances and difficult terrain, where military victory depends on preventing the rebels from transforming local resentment into a wider uprising.
Egypt’s southern frontier gives the pursuit strategic importance because piracy and revolt can threaten the movement of grain, troops and taxes along the Nile. Macro and Cato must distinguish local hostility from the organised network created by Ajax, while operating in conditions where distance and unfamiliar terrain reduce the usual advantages of a Roman field army.
