Britain, AD 44. A Druid faction captures the wife and children of the Roman commander Aulus Plautius and threatens to execute them unless its demands are met. Macro and Cato are sent beyond the army’s secure lines to locate the hostages and negotiate or rescue them. Their mission takes them through communities divided between resistance, accommodation and fear, where a failed decision could damage both the commander’s family and Rome’s campaign.
The hostage crisis exposes the limits of Roman occupation at an early stage of the conquest. Plautius commands legions but cannot simply use their strength without risking his family and provoking communities whose allegiance remains uncertain. Macro and Cato must work through local knowledge and negotiation in territory where Rome’s authority exists more on paper than in practice.
