The dog’s viewpoint allows Treece to move between British and Roman societies without making either side fully comprehensible or morally simple. Bran travels from the campaigns in Britain towards Gaul and Rome, encountering military discipline, spectacle and the reach of empire. The novel offers younger readers an unusual perspective on the invasion of AD 43 and its consequences.
