Drucus Pollio has survived a long career in the Roman army and withdrawn to a small villa in Britain, where the routines of gardening and estate life appear to offer distance from military violence. The Boudican uprising destroys that assumption when rebel warriors enter his property and the retired centurion must face an enemy army without the protection of his former legion.

Drucus’s discipline and refusal to show fear give him an unexpected chance of survival, but the encounter forces him to reconsider the authority represented by the bronze sword he once carried. Written for younger readers, the short novel places one veteran’s household inside the terror and uncertainty of AD 60–61. An expanded American edition appeared as The Centurion in 1967.
