Lalo Otter, the son of a hill settlement’s chief, grows up hunting with flint weapons and preparing for adult responsibility. His world is destroyed when mounted cattle-herders armed with copper and bronze cross the sea, kill his father and scatter the community. Among the invaders is Cradoc, a boy related to the ruthless Bronze King.

Chance turns Lalo and Cradoc from enemies into companions. Their friendship offers a possible alternative to the cycle of conquest and revenge that has trapped both peoples. Set during the transition between older farming communities and incoming metal-working elites, the novel uses survival, initiation and alliance to imagine cultural change in prehistoric Britain.
