Bronze Age Britain developed after the spread of metalworking and new burial practices in the third millennium BCE. Farming communities occupied landscapes already marked by Neolithic monuments while building roundhouses, barrows, field systems and regional exchange networks.
Bronze tools and weapons did not replace stone immediately, but metal became increasingly important for status, craft and warfare. Archaeology reveals substantial variation between regions and over the long duration of the period.
Rosemary Sutcliff’s Warrior Scarlet is a major example.
