Dominus begins under Marcus Aurelius in AD 165 and follows seven further generations of the Pinarius family. Plague, frontier war and the reign of Commodus give way to the Severans, military emperors and the political fragmentation of the third-century crisis.

The family’s craftsmen and courtiers witness changing attitudes towards Christianity, repeated civil wars and Diocletian’s effort to rebuild imperial government. The sequence ends with Constantine, whose conversion and patronage transform the relationship between Roman power and the religion it had once persecuted.
