Masters of Rome

by Simon Turney Book 2 in the Rise of Emperors series.

First published 2021

4.4(2,251)

The Roman Empire, AD 305–311. Diocletian and Maximian abdicate, but the carefully arranged Tetrarchy cannot contain the ambitions of heirs, armies and regional courts. Constantine and Maxentius each claim legitimacy through different combinations of blood, acclamation and political necessity.

Their former friendship is strained by rebellions and shifting alliances as multiple emperors compete for recognition. Persecution, propaganda and military loyalty divide the empire into armed blocs. Both men learn to rule, but every success narrows the possibility that they can coexist, preparing the invasion of Italy that will decide which vision of Rome survives.
