Raised on Avalon as Eilan, the future Helena leaves the island after falling in love with the Roman officer Constantius. Their son Constantine grows into a contender for imperial power, drawing Helena into the political and religious struggles of the Tetrarchy and the civil wars that reunify the empire.
As Constantine’s mother and later empress, Helena travels across the Roman world and confronts the expanding influence of Christianity. Her pilgrimage to Jerusalem and search for common truth between the Goddess and the Christian faith make the novel both a fictional life of Helena and an account of the religious transformation of the fourth-century empire.
