The Roman Empire, late third and early fourth centuries. Diocletian responds to decades of invasion and usurpation by dividing imperial responsibility among four rulers. Against this changing system, the young Constantine and Maxentius meet at Treverorum and begin a friendship shaped by fathers, courts and expectations they did not choose.
As the Tetrarchy hardens into a structure of surveillance and rivalry, both men rise through military and political stations. Personal loss and religious tension accompany the reforms intended to save Rome. Their paths repeatedly converge, making clear that the purple offered to one may eventually place him against the other.
