Gaul, 52 BCE. Vercingetorix unites much of the country in revolt and cuts Caesar off from the bulk of his army. Fronto carries an urgent warning from Massilia as Roman commanders struggle to concentrate their forces before the rebels can destroy isolated garrisons and turn the invasion into a retreat.
The campaign moves through Avaricum and the reverse at Gergovia towards the encirclement of Alesia. Fronto and the Tenth face hunger, divided loyalties and an enemy who has learned from years of Roman warfare. Caesar’s greatest victory depends on fortifications built between two armies, but the cost of breaking the revolt changes conquerors and conquered alike.
