Britain, AD 70–73. In the aftermath of Rome’s civil wars, Agricola returns as commander of the Twentieth Legion. The unit is divided, near mutiny and burdened by the failures of previous officers, while the Brigantes test a province whose garrisons have been weakened by events elsewhere in the empire.
Agricola attempts to restore discipline without wasting soldiers and to distinguish negotiation from weakness. The arrival of Governor Quintus Petillius Cerialis brings a more aggressive campaign and places the legion at the centre of Flavian consolidation. Command now requires Agricola to protect his men, satisfy the new regime and confront the human consequences of renewed conquest.
