During Flavian rule in Roman Britain, Eilan, granddaughter of the Arch-Druid, is called to serve in the sanctuary known as the Forest House. Her forbidden relationship with Gaius Macellius, a Roman officer of mixed British and Roman descent, leaves her divided between personal love and a priesthood threatened by both occupation and militant resistance.
As conflict hardens around the Druids, Eilan becomes High Priestess and tries to prevent vengeance from destroying her people. Her friend Caillean carries surviving women and Eilan’s son Gawen to the isle that will become Avalon, creating the institution that anchors the later series.
