In AD 77, Gaius Valerius Verrens returns to Britannia as legal adviser and deputy to the governor Gnaeus Julius Agricola. Moving his family away from Domitian’s hostility appears to offer protection, but the massacre of a Roman garrison and the death of a legionary commander disrupt Agricola’s plans for expansion.
Suspicion falls on the Druids of Mona, and Valerius is ordered to lead the ill-regarded Ninth Legion against the threat. The campaign forces him back into the landscape where his military career began, while the danger to his wife and son reveals that political rivalries within the Roman command may be as lethal as resistance beyond it.
