After Otho’s defeat in AD 69, Gaius Valerius Verrens is condemned as a deserter and prepared for execution. His life is spared on condition that he support Vespasian, whose eastern legions have declared him emperor against Vitellius. The bargain turns Valerius from celebrated soldier into an enemy of the regime controlling Rome.
He travels south through a country divided by civil war, hoping to persuade Vitellius to surrender before the capital becomes a battlefield. Personal friendship, military honour and political necessity pull in different directions as Valerius confronts betrayal within both camps and the knowledge that even a negotiated victory may not end the killing.
