Gaius Valerius Verrens returns from Britain celebrated for his part in resisting Boudicca, but the wounds of the campaign have altered both his body and his place within his family. Rome is equally unstable: Nero’s court is governed by suspicion, and the growing Christian community is presented to the emperor as a political threat.
Nero orders Valerius to identify and capture Petrus, the leader known to the Romans as Peter, threatening thousands of Judaeans if he fails. The search takes Valerius beyond the capital and forces him to choose between obedience to the emperor and his judgement of people whose beliefs make them vulnerable to state violence.
