Book
Avenger of Rome
Nero sends Gaius Valerius Verrens to Antioch with secret authority to judge the loyalty of Gnaeus Domitius Corbulo, the respected commander of Rome’s eastern armies. Valerius admires Corbulo, but the emperor fears that a general with popular support and experienced legions may be preparing to seize power.
The mission is overtaken by war when Vologases of Parthia threatens Rome’s eastern frontier. Marching with Corbulo beyond the Tigris, Valerius must survive an outnumbered campaign while deciding whether the greater danger lies with the Parthian army, a possible usurper or the emperor who expects his order to be carried out.
