In January 1943, Jan Kalisz has promised to obtain weapons for Jews preparing to resist inside the Warsaw Ghetto. An apparently useful opportunity appears when a German officer with several identities is murdered, but the investigation draws Kalisz into the enclosed district as deportation, starvation and armed resistance move towards confrontation.
The victim’s hidden Jewish identity is only one part of the mystery. Orphaned children are also disappearing from the ruined streets, and survivors speak of a figure called the Golem. Kalisz must identify both the murderer and the person taking the children while concealing his resistance work from the German police and the SS forces tightening their control of the ghetto.
