Hadrian intends to impose a new defensive frontier across northern Britannia, but the province must first be stabilised. Marcus’s Horse and other auxiliaries are sent against a Brigantian rising while Irish raiders carry captives away from areas that Rome considers secure, forcing the cavalry to operate beyond familiar roads and forts.

The campaign also renews an older personal threat. Macro and his comrades encounter enemies connected with Morwenna and the figure they know as the Red Witch, bringing private vengeance into a frontier war. The novel combines the practical demands of cavalry campaigning with the political shift toward Hadrian’s Wall, as Rome attempts to replace repeated conquest with a boundary that its soldiers will still have to fight to defend.
