The Medicus

Ruth Downie’s Medicus series follows Gaius Petreius Ruso, a Roman army doctor whose attempts to practise medicine repeatedly draw him into suspicious deaths, military scandals and local conflicts. His British partner Tilla brings a different understanding of Roman rule, and their uneasy partnership develops into a marriage while they move between forts, provincial towns, southern Gaul and Rome during the reign of Hadrian.

The eight novels combine historical crime with domestic comedy and a close view of medicine, law, slavery and army life at the edge of the empire. The first four books originally appeared in the United Kingdom under titles beginning “Ruso and…”, while later editions adopted the American titles Medicus, Terra Incognita, Persona Non Grata and Caveat Emptor.
