Vibia Sabina was the wife of the emperor Hadrian and received the title Augusta during his reign. She travelled widely with the imperial court and was represented extensively in official portraiture, but ancient sources suggest that the marriage was emotionally distant and produced no children. Her public position nevertheless helped project dynastic stability and the image of an imperial household.
Sabina was a grand-niece of Trajan and married Hadrian before his accession, making the union an important part of the Nerva-Antonine dynastic succession. She accompanied the imperial court on major journeys and was granted the title Augusta in 128. Her portrait appeared widely on coins and monuments, giving her an unusually visible public role for an empress; the marriage remained childless and she was deified after death.
