In AD 117, army doctor Gaius Petreius Ruso arrives at Deva in Roman Britain hoping to repair his finances and rebuild his career. Instead he acquires an injured British slave called Tilla and becomes involved in the deaths of women working around the legionary settlement, crimes that the military authorities would prefer to ignore.
Ruso’s medical duties, debts and uneasy relationship with Tilla complicate an investigation that exposes the vulnerability of women living beside the fortress. The novel was originally published in the United Kingdom as Ruso and the Disappearing Dancing Girls.
