Quintus Valerius Mysteries

The Quintus Valerius Mysteries follow a former Praetorian guardsman serving as an imperial investigator during the reign of Severus Alexander. In AD 224, Quintus works with his British optio Tiro and Julia Aureliana as cases of murder and corruption expose the tensions holding the empire together. The Governor’s Man investigates missing silver and rebellion in Britannia; The Carnelian Phoenix carries the characters through Gaul to a conspiracy in Rome; and The Loyal Centurion moves north from Eboracum to Hadrian’s Wall, Vindolanda and Pictish territory.

The opening three novels combine historical crime with military and political suspense. Provincial taxation, army command, Roman law, cultural division and imperial succession are not merely background: each shapes what evidence can be trusted and whose loyalty can be bought. The series presents the Roman Empire from the viewpoint of investigators who move between elite households, military institutions and communities living under Roman rule.
