Senna, a native Briton married to the Roman auxiliary soldier Brigius, accidentally discovers a plan by the rebellious Maeatae during Rome’s campaigns in northern Britain. Their precarious peace is further threatened when the imperial prince Caracalla arrives with a contingent of dangerous Numidian cavalry and brings the violence of imperial politics into the life of their small family.
Written jointly by Ruth Downie and S. J. A. Turney, the short story follows Senna and Brigius as they attempt to prevent a wider conflict without betraying either their community or one another. The work is officially titled The Bear and the Wolf, although it is sometimes listed without the initial article as Bear and the Wolf.
