Book
Memento Mori
First published 2018
Ruso and Tilla travel to Aquae Sulis after the wife of their friend Valens is found stabbed in the sacred spring. Temple officials fear that a public murder inquiry will damage the sanctuary’s reputation, while the victim’s family accuses Valens and demands that he submit to Roman justice.
Valens’s refusal to explain his movements leaves Ruso uncertain whether he is protecting a friend or helping a killer escape. The investigation moves through the bath complex, temple economy and private households of a provincial spa town where religion, commerce and gossip are difficult to separate.
