Valens
328–378
Valens was eastern Roman emperor from AD 364 to 378. His defeat and death at Adrianople against the Goths became one of the most serious military disasters in late Roman history.
In Simon Turney’s Para Bellum, the crime helped ignite the Gothic War and the disaster at Adrianople, where Emperor Valens and much of his army were killed.
In non-fiction, Valens is discussed in Nick Holmes’s The Fall of Rome. In Nick Holmes’s The Fall of Rome, the narrative follows Valens, Theodosius I, Stilicho, Honorius and Alaric through divided courts, military rivalries and repeated failures of negotiation.
