Valentinian I
321–375
Valentinian I was proclaimed emperor in 364 and appointed his brother Valens to govern the eastern provinces. Ruling from the West, he strengthened the Rhine and Danube frontiers, campaigned against the Alamanni and Quadi and responded to revolts and incursions in Africa and Britain.
His reign is examined alongside that of Valens in Ian Hughes’s Imperial Brothers. The comparison contrasts Valentinian’s reputation as an energetic frontier emperor with the eastern crisis that culminated under Valens at Adrianople, while showing that both brothers faced the structural pressures of governing a divided empire.
