Ammianus Marcellinus

Ammianus served in the Roman army and wrote a continuation of Tacitus covering the fourth century, though only the later books survive. His narrative includes Constantius II, Julian, Persia, court politics, frontier war and the disaster of Adrianople.

He belongs in Classical for pages on late Rome, Julian, the Roman-Persian frontier, the Gothic crisis and imperial administration. His soldier’s perspective makes him one of the most valuable sources for the later empire.
