Battle of Adrianople

The Battle of Adrianople was fought in AD 378 between the eastern emperor Valens and Gothic forces. The Roman army suffered a disastrous defeat, and Valens was killed. The loss shocked the empire and revealed the danger of misjudging mobile, desperate, and well-led opponents.

Adrianople mattered because it weakened Roman confidence and changed the political handling of Gothic groups inside the empire.
