Reign of Hadrian
117–138 CE
Hadrian abandoned some of Trajan's eastern conquests, strengthened frontiers and spent much of his reign travelling through the empire. His building programme included Hadrian's Wall and the reconstruction of the Pantheon.
His marriage to Vibia Sabina produced no heir. The emperor's attachment to Antinous and the young man's death in the Nile became central to Hadrian's later public and private image.
Lady of the Eternal City places Sabina, Hadrian and Antinous within a fictional family conflict that extends through the emperor's final years.
