Nerva–Antonine Dynasty
96–192 CE
Nerva's accession after Domitian began a succession of emperors often linked by adoption rather than direct inheritance. Trajan expanded the empire to its greatest territorial extent, while Hadrian consolidated frontiers and travelled widely.
Imperial women, court households and chosen heirs played essential roles in maintaining legitimacy. Succession was therefore shaped by private relationships as well as public institutions.
The later Empress of Rome novels use this dynasty as the setting for the lives of Vix, Sabina and their families.
