Marcus Oclatinius Adventus was a Roman equestrian officer whose career illustrates the increasing political importance of professional soldiers under the Severan emperors. Ancient sources describe him as rising from relatively humble military service through a succession of commands and procuratorial posts before becoming one of Emperor Caracalla’s praetorian prefects. His advancement was exceptional enough to provoke senatorial disdain, because he lacked the traditional education and civil experience expected of men who entered the empire’s highest governing offices.
When Caracalla was assassinated in 217, Adventus was present with the eastern army and was considered a possible imperial candidate, but his age and limited administrative background counted against him; Macrinus, his fellow praetorian prefect, became emperor instead. Macrinus then elevated Adventus into the Senate, appointed him urban prefect and designated him consul for 218, decisions criticised by Cassius Dio and other elite observers. The sources are hostile and incomplete, so many details of Adventus’s early life and final fate remain uncertain, but his career demonstrates how military service could breach Rome’s older social hierarchies.
