Britannia, AD 123. Construction of Hadrian’s Wall has begun, but raids and revolt continue to threaten Roman control of the northern frontier. Marcus is captured by enemies who also seize the Sword of Cartimandua, turning the loss of one officer into a crisis with symbolic as well as military consequences.

Carried far from his unit and forced into slavery, Marcus must survive long enough to escape and find a route back to the frontier. His absence leaves comrades uncertain whether he is alive, while possession of the sword strengthens enemies who understand its importance. The novel combines captivity and pursuit with the practical instability of a frontier being fortified before Roman authority there is fully secure.
