Caledonia during the Roman advance into northern Britain. A succession of tribal chieftains inherits the duty of defending land, kin and sacred traditions against local rivals and an imperial army determined to extend Roman authority beyond the existing frontier. Druids, warriors and family alliances shape each generation’s response to invasion.

The conflict moves towards Agricola’s northern campaign and the Battle of Mons Graupius, but Roman victory does not produce permanent conquest. Blending documented warfare with elements of historical fantasy, the novel follows a bloodline whose resistance becomes a way of explaining why Caledonia remained culturally and politically beyond Rome’s secure control.
