A reclusive seer tells Alun to find a ‘Battle Prince’ with whom he will help save Gwynedd, and he believes the prophecy points to Cadfael ap Iowerth.
The two young men become blood brothers and enter the service of Rhodri Mawr as coastal attack and rivalry among neighbouring powers threaten the kingdom. Their friendship provides a fictional soldier’s view of Rhodri’s attempt to defend and strengthen Wales, while the uncertain prophecy tests how much of history is made by destiny and how much by preparation and loyalty.
