Falls the Shadow
First published 1988
England and Wales, 1231–1265. Simon de Montfort, a French-born nobleman, secures the earldom of Leicester and marries Eleanor, sister of Henry III. His early loyalty to the king deteriorates as disputes over money, patronage and royal government move him towards the reforming barons.
The struggle produces the Provisions of Oxford and the Second Barons’ War. Simon defeats Henry at Lewes and briefly governs through a council and parliament, while maintaining an alliance with Llywelyn ap Gruffudd in Wales. His refusal to compromise divides his supporters and leads to his defeat and death at Evesham.
