Second Barons’ War
1264–1267 CE
The Second Barons’ War grew from opposition to Henry III’s government and the failure of the Provisions of Oxford. Simon de Montfort led reforming barons who sought to limit royal patronage and place government under a council. Open war began in 1264, and Montfort’s victory at Lewes left Henry and his son Edward in captivity.
Montfort governed in the king’s name and summoned assemblies that included knights and representatives of towns, but his dominance and dependence on a narrowing circle alienated former allies. Edward escaped, gathered royalist forces and defeated Montfort at Evesham in 1265. Resistance continued until the Dictum of Kenilworth and the final settlement in 1267.
Sharon Kay Penman’s Falls the Shadow makes the relationship between Simon de Montfort, Henry III and the Welsh princes central to the crisis. The setting suits novels about reform, parliament, divided noble families, rebellion and the limits of idealistic government.
