The novel follows the breakdown of Montfort’s power through manoeuvre, siege warfare and divided personal loyalties before reaching the Battle of Evesham. Adam must decide what he owes to the cause that restored his fortunes when its chances of survival are collapsing. Ross presents Evesham not merely as a set-piece battle but as the brutal conclusion to a year in which political reform, private ambition and sworn allegiance become increasingly difficult to reconcile.
