In 1272, Braxton de Banastre remains outlawed after escaping the defeat of Simon de Montfort’s supporters at Evesham. Henry III declares that he bears a wolf’s head, placing him outside the law and allowing anyone to kill him while forbidding ordinary people to provide food or shelter.
Braxton survives through allies in the Fenlands and through possession of coronation jewels lost from King John’s baggage train. He intends to use the regalia to legitimise a new monarch, drawing him into Welsh and Scottish resistance and into the succession crises that follow the deaths of Plantagenet kings.
