House of Stewart Trilogy

Beginning in the later fourteenth century and continuing into the troubled reign of Robert III, the House of Stewart Trilogy follows Scotland’s first Stewart kings as they struggle to turn a disputed inheritance into a durable dynasty. The crown has come through Marjorie Bruce, daughter of Robert the Bruce, but royal kinship offers little security: rival Stewart branches, the formidable Douglases and ambitious regional lords repeatedly threaten the realm.

The story is largely observed through men whose loyalties draw them into the family’s quarrels, especially Sir Jamie Douglas and the younger generation of Stewarts. Across the Battle of the Clans, the contest between the Duke of Rothesay and the Duke of Albany, and the removal of the future James I from Scotland, private vengeance, marriage and conscience become instruments of statecraft. The trilogy presents the early Stewart monarchy as a precarious achievement, preserved less by harmony than by political instinct and survival.
