Arthur has turned his cavalry into the foundation of British military power and adopted Christianity as a public means of uniting his kingdom. A summons from Constantine, the new Roman emperor and son of Arthur’s defeated enemy, offers the possibility of peace but may also be an invitation to execution.
The journey to the imperial court forces Arthur to confront the religious and political compromises of his kingship. Pagan loyalty, Christian legitimacy and personal vengeance surround every negotiation, while the cavalry on which Britain depends may become the instrument either of reconciliation with Rome or of another war.
