Tom Thatcher is a young serf angered by laws that bind labourers to the land and leave them close to starvation. An accidental death during a fight forces him to flee, and his attempt to obtain a papal pardon sends him east to take part in the siege of Caffa, where war exposes him to unfamiliar peoples and new forms of violence.
Tom returns to a Europe transformed by plague and deepening resentment against landlords and taxation. The skills and friendships formed during exile draw him towards the movement that becomes the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381. His demand for personal freedom grows into a wider challenge to serfdom and the political order that sustains it.
