After King John accepts Magna Carta and the pope declares the settlement invalid, England descends into the First Barons’ War. John’s death leaves the child Henry III dependent on William Marshal and on men such as Frederick Banastre, whose previous rebellion does not prevent him from recognising the danger of another disputed succession.
The Banastre family’s service carries them from attempts on the young king’s life to the crusading siege of Damietta. Royal politics, Templar networks and religious violence overlap, forcing Frederick to defend a monarchy he once opposed because the alternatives threaten to fracture England completely.
