Kristin Lavransdatter

The Kristin Lavransdatter trilogy follows a landowner’s daughter from childhood in Gudbrandsdalen through marriage, motherhood, bereavement and old age in fourteenth-century Norway. Kristin’s love for the charismatic Erlend Nikulausson overturns the marriage arranged by her father and binds her to a man whose political recklessness repeatedly threatens their household. Across the three volumes, the story moves between rural estates, Oslo, Nidaros and religious communities while tracing the consequences of choices made in youth.

The series combines a family saga with a detailed reconstruction of late-medieval law, farming, pilgrimage, childbirth, kinship and Catholic devotion. National politics enter through the minority and reign of Magnus VII, the regency of Erling Vidkunsson and Erlend’s involvement with rival claimants to the Norwegian throne. The final volume carries the family story into the Black Death of 1349, making private guilt, religious faith and the destruction caused by plague part of the same historical narrative.
