Stephen Church studies Henry III’s long reign as a period in which English government and Parliament were fundamentally reshaped. The biography follows the king from a minority after civil war through ambitious continental policies, costly patronage and repeated disputes over taxation and foreign advisers.

Henry’s conflict with Simon de Montfort culminated in the Second Barons’ War and experiments in representative government.
