A. J. Pollard examines Edward IV as the young Yorkist commander who seized the throne during the Wars of the Roses. The biography follows his early victories, conflict with the Earl of Warwick, temporary deposition and return to power, after which he established a more stable and prosperous regime.

Edward combined military ability and personal charm with factional loyalties and an appetite for pleasure. Pollard argues that his ultimate failure was dynastic: his sudden death left a child heir, enabling Richard III’s usurpation and undoing the political order Edward had built.
